TREKKING
IN NEPAL
|
| |
| Annapurna
Foothills |
This
trek follows little used trails through
Gurung villages north of the Madi Khola
valley.
We begin by the shores of Begnas Tal and
trek through oak forests rich in birdlife
and wildflowers to the pretty village of
Siklish. There are few trekkers along this
route and our leisurely pace allows plenty
of time to meet the Gurung villagers and
admire a way of life that has seen little
change. As we cross over into the Pokhara
Valley |
 |
|
we are met with panoramic
views of the eastern Annapurna, Lamjung Himal
and the beautiful 'fishtail' peak of Machapuchhare.
Our trek finishes close to Pokhara where we have
a rest day by the lake before flying back to Kathmandu.

Our two week itinerary takes us straight
into the heart of the Khumbu with the
short flight to Lukla. We soon enter Sagarmatha
National Park and trek toward Namche Bazaar
where we have time to visit the Sherpa
museum and watch the sunset on Mt Everest
and the Lhotse/Nuptse wall.
We spend a night at Tengboche to enjoy
the 360'

mountain panorama and visit
the monastery where we may be lucky enough to
witness a ceremony. From here we descend to the
picturesque village of Khumjung. The ancient gompa
here contains some grotesque masks of demons and
you can be shown the fabled yeti scalp. There
are many possibilities for day hikes to high viewpoints
of the Himalayan giants....Makalu, Everest, Cho-Oyu,
Gaurishanker and the beautiful peak of Ama Dablam,
before returning to Lukla for the spectacular
mountain flight to Kathmandu. |

| Kali
Gandaki Explorer |
We
fly to Jomsom in the upper Kali Gandaki
Valley and enter a different world of whitewashed
Tibetan style houses with Buddhist prayer
flags flying from the corners of every building.
The landscape is arid yet remarkably beautiful
with snow capped peaks forming a contrast
to the eroded hillsides below. We spend
a night in Kagbeni, the gateway to Mustang,
and have time to explore the narrow streets
and visit the ancient gompa. |

The climb to Muktinath is a gradual one which
we take slowly to reach the temple complex that
contains the eternal flame and 108 waterspouts
that grant salvation to both Hindus and Buddhists
that bathe there. In the summer we may be lucky
enough to see the Yartung festival where the Thakali
people hold horse races through the streets of
Muktinath.
There are outstanding views across barren hillsides
dotted with numerous caves to the triangular massif
of Dhaulagiri. From our high point we descend
into the deepest valley in the world and follow
the Kali Gandaki River through prosperous Thakali
villages and fields that become greener each day.
We spend a day relaxing by the lake at Pokhara
before flying back to Kathmandu. A short trek
with much scenic and cultural interest. |

| Annapurna
Sunrise |
The trek begins with a steep climb up
to the Dhampus Ridge where our efforts
are rewarded by vistas of the high peaks
of the Annapurna Massif. The mountains
get ever closer as we reach Chomrong,
nestled beneath the fish-tail peak of
Machapuchhare, and the gateway to the
Annapurna Sanctuary.
We take a delightful
high path that traverses the
|
 |
|
mountainside towards the
ridgetop settlement of Tadapani, an excellent
viewpoint for an Annapurna sunrise. A ridgetop
trail leadsGhorapani and affords views of Dhaulagiri
(8167m) and way below to the deepest valley in
the world, the Kali Gandaki. A pre-dawn start
is required to reach the summit of Poon Hill for
one of the most beautiful sunrises in the world.
We have a rest day by the lake in Pokhara before
flying the length of the Himalaya back to Kathmandu.
This is a beautiful short trek that passes through
the interesting Gurung villages of the Annapurna
Conservation Area, with opportunities to view
wildlife, wildflowers and of course the Annapurna
sunrise whilst staying in some of the best lodges
in Nepal. |
